Tassels

One of the very first fibre classes I took was about making tassels.  That was many years ago and I haven't made a lot of tassels since but decided to give them a play again.  Using scraps, bits and pieces really appeals to me right now so these tassels are a real hodgepodge but I love them.

Artist in Residence update

There are only a few weeks left of my residency with the Ayr Library.  To say that I have completely enjoyed it is an understatement.  The library staff are the best!  The beautiful libraries I have visited in the Region of Waterloo are utterly charming.  The workshop participants have been lovely.

Part of the mandate of the residency is to engage the community with art.  To that end, I have had people altering book pages to be included in the altered book that I am creating.  Pictured above are some of the pages created.

I am already starting to dream up another artist in residence proposal.  I really want to do more of this!

Work in Progress Wednesday

Here is the culmination of this year's guild challenge.  I think our 'sinchies look fabulous.  I have to say that I love being a part of the Grand Guild of Fibre Artists.  There are so many creative and talented women in this group.

Another Challenge

I really enjoy a good challenge.  I like that they force me outside of the box.  I am excited to have signed up for the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design Burlesque challenge.  They provide a beautiful array of Kreinik threads to use in the challenge.  I honestly have no clue what I am going to do for the challenge.  I don't even have time to think about it at this point but I can't wait to start playing with all these gorgeous threads!

Work in Progress Wednesday

Our guild challenge for this year is coming to a close.  White is the last colour for our sinchie (six inch square) challenge.  White was definitely a challenge.  There isn't an easy way to vary value with white.  I used fibre paste, glass bead gel and some fabric paint.  Next week all of our sinchies will be on display in St. Jacobs.  It will be a really good show!

I heart Macro

A lovely bouquet was given to me by a perfect stranger.   I had to work on Mother's Day ( I realize many mothers do).  I never have had to prior to this.  I work at a theatre part-time.  One of the soloists that performed gave me his bouquet.  How blessed am I!

A riot of colour

Even though May is such a busy month for me I am still making time for my creativity.  I am having a blast creating my coffee filter mandalas.  I have a lovely collection of them and when things slow down to a more normal speed I will take them further.  Beading and stitch come to mind.  Here is the link for how to make the mandala

Work in Progress Wednesday

My bead journal for May is coming along.  I want to point out that I used a coffee filter with this one.  I have forgotten how I applied colour to it, there are numerous ways.  I then cut it out and sandwiched it between two sheer fabrics using fusible web.  I then applied it to black wool and started beading and stitching.  I love the way it is coming along!

Beyond Take a Stitch Tuesday Challenge

The Beyond TAST challenge is to experiment with layering stitches.  The idea of layering a stitch really appealed to me.  If I had been really clever I would have chosen a stitch for which I needed practice.  Also, I would have chosen a simpler shape or at least placed this shape in the centre.  Still, I really enjoyed doing this and may need to try again.

The Circle My Favorite Shape

I learned a new technique to make mandalas.  Using a permanent metallic marker acts as a resist.  You get a batik feel using this technique.  I am having so much fun with it!  I have been making at least one per day this week.  They look fabulous and I definitely want to take them further.  Even though they are made with coffee filters the paper is very durable and will take some stitch.

Work in Progress Wednesday

There is only a little over a month left of my artist in residency with the Ayr Library.  I have completely enjoyed doing this and am now focusing on getting the altered book complete.  The cover is going to depict Watson Pond which is in Ayr.  Pictured above is what I am planning to use for the water.  I had a lot of fun creating it.  One of my fibre guild friends shared a piece of interestingly textured stained glass with me.  I used it to do a rubbing with crayons onto mulberry paper.  I then adhered a piece of sheer blue fabric to it with glass beads gel (a medium by Liquitex).  I love the way it looks!

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Sharon B has us doing the French Knot this week. I think I have done a million French Knots over the years!  For a long time, I just didn't get how to do a French Knot properly.  My sister, Nancy is a very accomplished needlewoman and it was her instruction that clicked in my brain.  I did this tree last year by the end of it I was pretty tired of the French Knot!

Beading

Last week I was inspired by Norma at http://notesfromnorma.blogspot.ca/  She submitted suns to the CBS Sunday Morning show and they put them on air.  I enjoy watching that show and had been thinking about sending some of my sun images.  So fresh with the inspiration I whipped up this beaded sun.  I have submitted it to CBS and will wait to hear back from them but I understand it can take months.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Getting an early start on my bead journal for May.  May is going to be a rather busy month.  The St. Jacobs Quilt and Fibre Art Festival will be happening May 22-May 26.  I am happy to say that I will have a crazy quilt on display at The Schoolhouse and two small quilts at Homer Watson Gallery.  As always, I will be participating in the show with my guild, Grand Guild of Fibre Artists.  What an amazing, talented and inspiring group of women they are!

April Bead Journal

My beaded apple is finished.  Going through my bead stash to find just the right beads is fun for me.  I have a beautiful collection of beads and feel very blessed to have so much.  Doing a bead journal a month for the rest of my life may not use it up.  Maybe I should be doing more beading!

Work in Progress Wednesday

Okay, I am happier with this six-inch square/sinchie for the guild challenge.  I added a few stitches with metallic thread which you can barely see.  I also added some beads.  Beads make everything better!  Our guild meets next week and I am excited to see what everyone else has done.  It is always so interesting to see people's creativity.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

I have added the Rice Stitch to my piece.  I used some knitting yarn in the lower left.  I think it looks pretty cool.  I also used pearl cotton and some DMC metallic thread in the others.  I am excited to try Sharon B's beyond TAST challenge.  I have an idea as to what I want to do but I haven't decided on the stitch I will use to layer.

Inspired

A number of years ago I inherited some hand embroidered quilt blocks.  I knew I wanted to do something with them but wasn't exactly sure what.  Today I was pondering making some journals for the St. Jacobs Quilt Show.  The Grand Guild of Fibre Artists always has a display/sale there.  I thought that journals with a quilt/fibre focus might sell and I could include some of these pretty pieces in them.  I can part with some of them as there are many.

Ayr Library Artist in Residence update

I am approximately half way through my artist in residency with the Ayr Library.  It is going really well.  I have met so many lovely people.  I have visited different libraries in the region and love each one of them.  They are peaceful, beautiful and feel like home.  Pictured above are some of the altered pages created by myself and the community.  They will all be put into an altered book that is being created for this residency.  I plan to create a stitched cover for the book.
The next workshop I am teaching is at the Linwood branch of the library.  It is on April 28, 10:30-12:30.  You can register at www.rwlibrary.ca or 519-575-4608  The workshops are always fun!

Work in Progress Wednesday

Our six-inch square guild challenge is red this month.  I am not sure if I have taken this far enough.  It seems like more could be done.  My base has two colors of red transfer foil applied to it.  The transfer foil did not transfer as well as expected so I added some red Inktense to cover the bare spots.  I then adhered the red paper kirigami.  I think it needs some hand stitching.  Hopefully, I will find the time before the meeting.

Interesting articles

Trying something a bit different today.  No photo.  I have never done a blog post without a picture.

I came across some really interesting articles that I want to remember and thought someone else might find them interesting.

Handmade sketchbooks can be found by clicking on that link.  A really talented artist there.

19th-century-embroidered-straightjacket is very interesting to see.  Stitching is good for the soul and this woman definitely figured that out.

The Mozart effect has been known about for a long time.  I simply need to remember to listen to more Mozart.

Just found another interesting article about a Canadian stitcherAmanda McCavour.  Her work has been at a local gallery.  This you woman is going places!  Yay!

Not accepted

I submitted this piece to the Quilting Arts Illumination challenge.  It was not accepted.  Rejection is never particularly easy to take.  Learning of the rejection was just the start of a particularly unpleasant day.  I volunteer to teach art to young men that are incarcerated and that afternoon they were not at their finest.  Often there is juvenile behavior, however, I don't let it bother me.  I try to concentrate on the positives but that day it just sent me into a tailspin.
I like this piece and had fun creating it so ultimately it doesn't matter that it was rejected.

Something a bit different

Actually, really different for me.  I rarely use brown.  Not quite sure why I stitched this little dog onto brown felt.  I certainly could have picked a more dynamic combination of colors.  Oh well, what I particularly love about this dog is the ear.  I had a piece of beach glass that is absolutely perfect and it makes me smile.

Work in Progress Wednesday

It is difficult for me to find work to blog about this week.  It certainly isn't because I haven't been creating.  Right now I  am working on a piece for publication, finished a piece I am hoping to have published and my work for my artist in residency at Ayr Library.  Also, I have started teaching art to seniors on a weekly basis and that requires a fair amount of prep.
I am finished my March 'sinchie' guild challenge and I posted that last week.  This is the start of my April piece.  The challenge color is obviously white.  I applied fibre paste using a texture plate to imprint it.  I must have set this piece on top of something that had blue paint on it as a bit has seeped onto it.  That may or may not get covered up.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Sharon B is challenging us to do the Chevron stitch this week.  I don't use this stitch very often but I am familiar with it.  I added the Fly stitch and the Chain stitch.  It makes an interesting seam embellishment.  These muted colors are very different for me but they work for this project.

Work in Progress Wednesday

My 'sinchie' is finished.  Our guild challenge is a six-inch square and the colour this month is brown.  I rarely work with the colour brown but I did manage to find some brown things in my stash.  I started with a hand-dyed wool as the base.   I added some painted cheesecloth and lace and kept building from there.  I really wanted this piece to be full of texture.  Silk pods, mica flakes, heated tyvek, a feather and a skeleton leaf were added to create a forest floor.

A highlight of our trip to Hawaii was Foster Botanical Garden.  I very happily spent time there.  Our Uber driver had never heard of the place and couldn't fathom why I wanted to go there, let alone bring a camera.  Clearly, we all aren't on the same page when it comes to beauty!  Kind of funny.

Journal page

The journal prompt this week is friends.  I wasn't particularly inspired.  This journal page is okay but the dog image isn't all that clear.  I should probably color it in with a black marker to make it a true silhouette.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This is the start of my bead journal for March.  I started by creating a mandala with paper and fabric.  I stitched all together, painted it, melted/burned some of the fabric away and wet the paper so that I could rub some of it away.  I have stitched it to black fabric and added some sequins.  Lots of beads to follow!

Not afraid of glue

I think for a long time I felt like others in the fibre community that glue was taboo.  I no longer feel that way and have been embracing using it.  I created these funky flowers with bits of thread and watered down glue.  Okay, they don't really look like flowers.  I need to further embellish them.  They won't be going on a quilt so it doesn't matter that I used glue.  They will be going into an altered book.

Journal

Still working with the 3R prompt.  I used a large envelope as the base of this journal cover.  I applied scraps of fabric that were given to me many years ago.  I have had so much fun with those scraps over the years.  So glad they didn't go in the garbage!  I did the pamphlet stitch to bind in the pages of fabric and paper.  I used some of the paper that I snow dyed a couple of weeks ago, a piece of fabric that was brought back from India by a sweet niece, and some ribbon leftover from Christmas.  I love this little journal!  It is funky and fun which suits me perfectly.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have already started working on my next 'sinchie' for our guild challenge.  The challenge is to work in a six-inch square format and the colour for March is brown.  Brown is not a colour that I use very often so I wanted to get right on this one.  I am going for a very textured piece that will look like the forest floor.  I have some silk pod pieces and heated tyvek pieces just sitting on top and not adhered yet.  I like the way it is coming but it definitely needs something else.  I won't attach the silk pod and tyvek pieces until I figure out what else is needed.
