Work in Progress Wednesday

Image
I have already started working on my next 'sinchie' for our guild challenge.  The challenge is to work in a six-inch square format and the colour for March is brown.  Brown is not a colour that I use very often so I wanted to get right on this one.  I am going for a very textured piece that will look like the forest floor.  I have some silk pod pieces and heated tyvek pieces just sitting on top and not adhered yet.  I like the way it is coming but it definitely needs something else.  I won't attach the silk pod and tyvek pieces until I figure out what else is needed.  I am linking to http://needleandthreadnetwork.blogspot.ca/ http://www.quiltfabrication.com/ https://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.ca/

January and February Bead Journal

Image
I so enjoy creating my bead journals.  This one is worked on wool felt.  Wool felt is a pleasure to stitch into.  I hope this piece exudes the joy that I had creating it. I am linking to http://ninamariesayre.blogspot.ca/

Still working the 3Rs prompt.  I work backstage at a theatre part-time and was thrilled to find some photocopied sheet music in the recycle bin.  I thought it would make an interesting background and it fits the prompt perfectly.  I created ribbon flowers and added lace, all of the components were found at a thrift store.  I ripped out a quote from a calendar.  The only thing not fitting the 3R theme is the butterfly which is a purchased die cut.

My fibre guild meets next week so I have finished my challenge.  This month our color is black for the sinchie challenge.  I have been trying to do a mixed media approach to this challenge.  I wrapped a six inch square of foam board with black fabric and black metallic thread.  I then painted a gold key black, not covering it entirely and also wrapped it with black beads.  I attached some words from an old book.  I really had fun with this one. Snow Dyeing

Image
Snow dyeing is something I have been wanting to try for quite a while.  I also had not thought about it for a while so when I saw another blogger mention it I decided to put it on my to-do list.  Yesterday was perfect to try it as we are not guaranteed to have snow if the predicted warm temperatures arrive next week.  I am not overly excited with the results.  The fabric can definitely be used but it is not terribly interesting.  I threw in some sari scraps that my thoughtful niece brought me from her trip to India.  They are cotton and very well worn.  Not sure how I will use them but it will come to me. I added some paper to the bottom of each container.  I had no expectation for the paper.  I actually quite love the way it turned out.  I will likely create some journal pages with it.  Also will add to some junk journals. The prompt for February is reuse, recycle and repurpose.  I wasn't feeling terribly inspired by this.  I made a colour copy of a fibre piece.  I like the piece but wanted to see if I could push it further.  A colour copy is a safe way to do that.  I added a bit of paint to it and the quote 'Reflect upon your present blessings of which every man has many- not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.'  Dickens

Well, maybe not so much work but definitely thinking and planning.  I bought these gorgeous fabrics when I was in Hawaii.  I was thrilled to find that fabric is not outrageously priced there.  I was fully expecting the fabric to expensive like it was in New Zealand.  I restrained myself admirably only buying these four pieces.  I am kind of regretting that!  Oh well, I really didn't need more fabric.  I have an idea percolating about how to use these pretties and hope to find the time to start soon. Take a Stitch Tuesday

Image
Sharon B  has us stitching the Fly stitch this week.  I use this stitch a lot on my crazy quilts.  This time I decided to stitch it on handmade paper.  I used a Kreinik metallic thread to add some shine.  I have done many stitches on handmade paper and think I am getting close to putting all those pieces together into a book.

Playing

Image
For the past year, I was very focused on finishing UFOs.  It felt very good to get quilts completed.  I did my first trunk show last month and my work was rewarded.  The trunk show was very successful and I am excited to do more of them!  However, exploring, puttering and experimenting were put aside for that time which was fine.  I am glad to back at playing though.  I created the above image with Kaleidoscope Kreator and one of my macro flower photos.  I am wanting to print it on fabric and embellish.  My printer hasn't been working properly so I am considering buying a new one.  I would love to get one that prints larger images. The theme for February is  ‘Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse’.  I went through my bits and pieces to find what would go together.  An ice dyed coffee filter, an acrylic skin and a photocopy of bead journal all jumped out at me.  The background is a piece of paper that I had used to clean off my paint brush.  I added a bit more paint and some stenciling to it.

My bead journal for January is stretching into February.  Holidays can mess with productivity.  On a positive note, I was finally able to capture the color accurately.  On a not so positive note, I feel like I have hit the ugly stage of this piece.  Well, maybe not ugly but chaotic.  I need to work on pulling this all together.  I feel confident that I can make this work. Sharon B  is encouraging us to do the Chain stitch this week.  I love the chain stitch and use it on a regular basis.  I have created a strawberry with it this week.  I am hoping to create a fruit shape with the TAST each week.  That may or may not work!

Guild Challenge

Image
This is my start for the February sinchie guild challenge.  Black is the color for this month.  I have black fabric wrapped around foam core and metallic black thread wrapped around that.  So far I have included a butterfly on each of my six-inch blocks.  I am trying to figure out how to make a butterfly with this spoon I have wrapped in beads and attach it to the block.  I am linking to http://ninamariesayre.blogspot.ca/

The journal prompt this week is words as it has been for the whole month of January.  I arrived home today after having been in Hawaii.  Home felt like the right word to use for my page.  Our vacation was utterly fabulous.  Vacations are great and they always make me appreciate my home and lifestyle all the more.  Even though it is cold and snowing right now and I am finding it hard to feel warm enough I am happy to be home.  My page was created with some hand dyed and crumpled paper.  I added some strips of hand dyed scrap fabric and my word, home.
