Work in Progress Wednesday

I am really enjoying stitching on this.  Right now I am trying to place flowers where stitching is needed to finish attaching the lace.  When I sewed the lace on by machine I was only making sure to catch one edge.  I knew that there would be a lot of embroidery on this piece and that would firmly attach the lace.  It really doesn't look like much yet but I know it will all come together.

Take a StitchTuesday

I love the Wheel Cup stitch that Sharon B encourages us to try this week.  I have done it numerous times but wanted to try it on some handmade paper. I used a white sparkly thread that unfortunately doesn't show up very well.  I also used some new thread that I purchased.  It is a perle cotton by Sue Spargo and I love it.

Slow Stitching Sunday

This is my second piece from the Textile.org Facebook challenge.  Cas Holmes was the challenge leader this week and asked us to make a small fabric collage that was inspired by something around our home.  My husband had bought a bouquet of flowers when he was getting us groceries so I used that for my inspiration.  It was fun to go through my bits and pieces and use them up.  I honestly wonder why I hang on to such small bits sometimes but then they do come in handy.  I posted about this piece earlier in the week and didn't feel like it was quite done.  I decided to add some found poetry to it and feel that is now complete.  I have loads of old book pages kicking around because I alter books.  I really enjoy cutting out words and phrases and putting them together to make a 'poem'.

March Bead Journal

I have been thinking it would be fun to teach a workshop on mandala making.  I enjoy making them so much and would love to share that with more people.  The beading is repetitive and peaceful. So is the mark-making when doing them on paper.  This bead journal isn't overly intricate but I still love it.

Mandala Meditation

My daily mandala meditation is a little different today.  I started with a graph from https://incompetech.com/graphpaper/.  There is a lot to choose from at that link so check it out if you are interested.  The mandala I created is probably a little more simple than what I usually do.  I admit I have not used that graph paper previously so there is a learning curve.  Still, it was relaxing and fun.

Work in Progress Wednesday

The latest challenge from the textile group on Facebook is to do a little collage.  It was fun to go through my scraps and find the right bits and pieces.  We were to be inspired by something in our home.  Since I have a beautiful bouquet of flowers that was the obvious place to start.  I love the way this is coming along and feel like it is quite close to finished.

Some more of the amazing street art that we saw in Playa del Carmen.  I am so grateful that we got to take this trip before all the craziness of the pandemic happened.  We saw some truly amazing street art as well as ate wonderful food.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I joined a stitching challenge on Facebook.  I have pondered whether I should post my sample.  It looks like a child did it.  The samples from others are absolutely art.  They have put a lot of time and effort into their samples.  I admit that I put minimal time into mine.  Others seem to have a lot of spare time during this pandemic but I have less.  I adore having my granddaughter and it is time-consuming so my stitching time is limited.

I used a wool thread that I have had for a long time and wanted to try it.  I stitched it on wool fabric.  Stitching with all wool is quite pleasant and I enjoyed it.  The stitching is so chunky so it went quickly.  I don't particularly like it but I can see that this wool could be useful in some circumstances.

Playing

Can you tell I have been hanging around with my two-year-old granddaughter?  Wow, this is pink!  I did not intend for it to be SO pink.  I played with permanent markers and rubbing alcohol to create this.  There are a number of things I like about this technique.  I like the way the colours bleed and blend.  I like that the alcohol evaporates fairly quickly so it doesn't take forever to dry.  I like that you get unexpected things.  Even though there is an abundance of pink I still think this piece can be useful.  I will do some beading and embroidering on it and that should break up the pink for me.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have sandwiched a paper kirigami piece between two sheer fabrics and machine stitched it all together.  I have also added some dimensional fabric paint.  I plan to add hand stitching and beading to it.  Another in my mandala series.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I haven't made a lot of progress on my bead journal.  I thought I would have more stitching time this past week but my son and granddaughter moved in with us.  My DIL is a nurse and they felt it would be safer if they stayed with us.  My son is a student right now and still has online classes so needs help to care for his daughter.  It is a complete joy to have them here.  Oh so tiring and my stitching time is very limited.  I am glad I can help them and build special memories.

In Process

I got the order of these photos wrong.  The first block is the one in the middle.  It is my Aunt Pat's embroidery.  I have been working some of her unfinished blocks that I inherited.  I am trying to keep some of her stitching still visible.

My next step is in the top photo.  I machine stitched one some bits and pieces of lace.  A very kind friend at work shared with her scraps as she is trying to clear out her studio.  They were perfect to add to this.

Yesterday I got out the paints and had it.  I love getting messy!  Now the block is ready to stitch into.  This is the third block I have done this way.  I am treating them all like wild gardens.  I am not sure if I will stitch all of them together or have them be individual pieces.  I have a LOT more of Aunt Pat's blocks so I could turn this into a big piece.  I don't have to decide right now.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have been adding more stitches to this piece.  I feel like the two ribbon roses are too large and might be a bit distracting.  I may have to remove them or add more.  Still to be decided.  This piece is colourful and fun and a joy to stitch.  I have so many beautiful and creative things to keep myself busy.  I am grateful.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Sharon B challenges us with the Pistil Stitch this week.  This is a stitch that I have used frequently so wanted to try something new with it.  So, of course, I added beads tot he stitch.  It was a bit tricky to get the french knot at the end of the beads but I kept at it.

More fabulous street art from Playa del Carmen.  I am ever so grateful that we got to take this trip before the coronavirus made havoc with travel plans.  Such crazy times!  I am also really grateful for my creativity as it helps to keep me mentally healthy in these crazy times.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am quite happy with this piece now.  I am leaning towards calling it finished.  Well, the fun part is finished.  I am not totally sure how I will put it together and bind it.  That is always a challenge for me.

I am eager to do this sort of piece again.  I was given a bag of laces last week.  Bits and pieces but ever so pretty and they will work really well for this technique.  I may have time to play with that idea in the coming weeks.  I just learned that the theatre where I work is closed until April 6.  My job is only part-time so it is a big hardship for me.  It isn't actually more stitching time for me as I get to stitch at my desk.  I will likely do more messy sorts of things.

I am really grateful that I got to do my trunk show in Fergus this past week.  It was well received and when someone in the audiences gasps or says wow, that feels really good.  A lot of ladies told me after the show that I was inspiring.  That also feels really good.

Another finish

Yay! Me!  Another beaded mandala piece is complete.  Finishes feel so satisfying.  I have had a lovely quiet week which has afforded me the time to get a long list of little things done.  I still have a stack of mandala pieces that need to be finished.  I will keep plodding away at that stack and keep adding to the stack.  I know I will be able to have a solo show with these pieces someday.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Oh, finishes feel so good.  I added a lot to these blocks and a button border.  It is rather busy but cheerful.  I really like the button border even though it isn't perfectly straight.  It is actually really close to straight for me.

I am doing a trunk show this evening and am happy to have this quilt to add to it.  Should be fun!

More street art from Playa del Carmen, Mexico.  There were many murals throughout the city.  What a joy to see art being appreciated on a large scale.  I was disappointed to learn that many times the artists were not compensated for their work.  They were given the materials to use so that is at least something.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I took this piece with me on my holidays.  Good thing it packed up small and I didn't take a lot of threads as I didn't do any stitching on it.  I made up for that now that I have returned.  I have learned a couple of new stitches and added them.  I love the way this is progressing.  It is a very happy piece.

Needle Felting

Wow, it has been quite a while since I have done any needle felting.  Kind of sad that it felt like a work out for me!  I had a lovely scrap of wool fabric laying on my desk and it called to me to become a leaf.  I love the shape of a Burr Oak leaf.  I have an altered book project that this leaf will be put into.  I may need to add some embroidery and or beading to it first though.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This is the very beginning of my March Bead Journal project.  It is, of course, a mandala.  I decided to use one of my mandala stencils on this one.  I have only previously used these stencils on my hand drawn mandalas.  It should be interesting to see where this takes me.

Mandala Meditation

I wonder if people are getting bored with my mandala meditations.  I am not getting bored with them.  This one I finished last fall and submitted it to San Francisco School of Needlework for their Healing and Reflection Challenge.  It is interesting to me that there were a number of people who stitched mandalas for this challenge.  There is a lot of interesting stitching at this link so do check it out.

I have just returned from Mexico where there was some fabulous street art.   We enjoyed a guided tour to see much art that is not on the usual path.  We would not have seen this otherwise.  Our guide was not terribly informative but he was pleasant.

My February Bead Journal

The beaded edge of this is a bit wonky.  I believe once I can fix it a bit when I stitch this down but I have to decide on a substrate onto which to do that.  For now I am calling this done.  I enjoyed the process as usual but particularly because I took a mixed media approach.  I am keen to do more mixed media beading and embroidering.

Mandalas

It is easy for me to get carried away creating mandalas.  I get lost in the process and have so much fun using different media/supplies.  This one I had adhered to one of my altered books.  After doing so I realized it wasn't quite up to snuff.  So, I am taking it further. I have added some 'gem' stones and think that works well.  I still feel like more could be done and will see what speaks to me next.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Sorry for the not great photo.  I am handicapped with technology this week.  It is so inconvenient to not have my computer working.  It does make me think of new ways to do things and that isn't bad but also not fun.  Anyway, I have resurrected this piece and have been doing more stitching on it.  I also removed some bits that weren't working.  I am happier with it now but also know that there is a lot more stitching I want to do on it.  No deadlines though and that feels good.

Progress

I am making progress on this piece.  I am calling it My Boho Garden.  There probably isn't much more embellishment needed.  At least I don't see any obvious places to add stitch right now.  I am planning to do a button border around the edge.  It might end up weighing five pounds!

Mandalas

I was asked for a tutorial on mandalas.  I honestly have no clue what the proper way to do a mandala is but I can explain the way I do them.  I purchased some mandala stencils last year and I am so glad that I did.  I use them regularly.  I believe I found them on Amazon.  I start with a white coffee filter and add colour.  I have numerous ways of doing that.  I use markers, watercolours, food colouring and anything else that grabs my attention.  I often do them in batches so that I have one dry and ready to go when I am.  I then choose a stencil and fill in the lines.  Again, there are many choices for this; coloured pencils, gel pens, markers etc.  Now that the basic design is started I let my imagination go wild to finish it.  I keep my marks fairly simple by using dots, dashes, Xs, C shapes etc.  I like to use a variety of markers, gel pens, pencil crayons, shimmer paints etc.  When I want to take a mandala even further I will stitch into it or glue on sequins etc.  The possibilities are limitless and it is very relaxing.

Work in Progress Wednesday

My February bead journal has been fun so far.  The base is a painted coffee filter adhered to fusible interfacing.  Coffee filters are quite durable and the interfacing makes them even more so.  I am not exactly sure what comes next for this piece.  I need to go digging through my bead stash to figure that out.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Sharon B shows the Raised Close Herringbone Stitch this week.  Love it!  It is such a pretty stitch.  I have never done this stitch and really hope that I remember to use it from now on!  It makes such a nice leaf and since I have so many floral projects that I am doing it will be very useful.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am not much of a gardener but I do love flowers.  This piece is progressing slowly but pleasantly.  It is cheerful to work on my colourful little piece especially when all is white outside.  I am thinking I will take this piece on holiday with me.  I can just picture myself by the pool stitching!

An Experimental Approach

This is the beginning of my bead journal for February.  I have painted a coffee filter with acrylic paints and while they were wet I added some thread bits.  I have fused the filter to interfacing and I am ready to start beading.  At the moment I have no clue as to how I am going to bead this.  I am confident that it will come to me though.

Mandalas

Okay, I am officially addicted to creating coffee filter mandalas.  The process is incredibly relaxing to me.  Not only that but I feel like I have learned a lot.  I can stop a project too soon.  With these coffee filter mandalas I just keep pushing.  I am not afraid to ruin them by going too far.  It is helping me be more courageous/daring in my other projects.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have been revisiting some work that I had considered finished.  I had stopped working on them before they were truly finished though.  I think I lose interest and need to move onto another project.  Or it could be that I just don't know what to do next and it is best to wait until I know for sure.  So, I add more stitching to this block and I am liking it better.  It still isn't finished but I am making headway and that feels good.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Sharon B showed us the Feather and Chain Stitch this week.  I decided to resurrect my stitching on hand made paper project.  It has been a while since I have stitched on these pages.  I think this stitch worked well.  This project has been going on for a long time and it is about time that I concentrate on finishing it.

It is fun to win art supplies

I follow Koh-i-noor and Grumbacher (different brands but one company) on Facebook.  They often do contests where you can win art supplies.  Last week I won and supplied them with my mailing address.  Today this is what arrived.  I have never used woodless colour pencils but I am excited to try them out!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I have really enjoyed adding more hand stitching to this.  It is fun to do at my job, which is basically babysitting a door.  I get the most wonderful comments from the people that come through and see it.  Nice comments are always gratifying.  I think I am getting pretty close to finished on this one.

Another Finish

I am on a roll!  It feels so good.  It is fun to use up some of my button stash to create a frame on my mandala pieces.  I think it works quite well.  It is also a good project to do while I am at work as it doesn't take a lot of thought.

Work in Progress Wednesday

So I persevered on this and added some more beads.  Stitching through the canvas was a bit difficult so I worked with smaller beads and therefore a smaller needle.  That made things easier.  I also added some dimensional fabric paint.  I am pleased with the results and consider the embellishments finished.  I am not completely sure how I will finish this project, as usual.

Taking it Further

I was happy with this piece but decided to take it further.  While I had out my hotfix crystals I decided to add some to this piece.  I like it even better now.  I still need to quilt/bind it but that shouldn't take too long.

Slow Stitching Sunday

This Dresden plate started with my Aunt Pat.  I love the idea of collaborating with her by using the pieces that I inherited from her.  I started embroidering the seams a number of years ago.  At the time I called it finished but wasn't truly happy with it.  I have decided to resurrect it to include in my mandala series.  I added a fair amount of stitching to it this week but there is still more to do.

A bit further

I have been trying to concentrate on finishes.  I have a number of mandalas that need something a little more.  This one is paper-based and could only take so much stitching and beading. I did not want to perforate the paper so much that it fell apart.   I wasn't overly pleased with it but couldn't think of what else to do until this week.  I decided to add hot fix crystals to it.  No stitching needed.  Definitely a mixed media approach and that makes me happy.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This is my bead journal project for January.  First I printed one of my photos onto canvas.  I then started stitching into it.  Yikes!  Not fun.  The canvas has a coating on it so that the printer ink doesn't sink into it.  It helps the colour stay more vibrant which is good.  However, it does make the stitching rather unpleasant.  Lesson learned.  I will not be doing that again but I did need to figure out a way to keep working on this piece.  I decided to take a more mixed media approach.  I have used heat-set crystals, dimensional fabric paint and glass gems.  I am not finished yet and may still add a bit more stitching.  I am not quite sure what the next step it at this moment.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

I love the Reversed Buttonhole Bar Stitch that Sharon B shows us the week.  I created a flower with it but it does look kind of spindly.  I think I need to add another stitch in between the spokes.
