Work in progress Wednesday

Image
This is my June crazy quilt block.  I am thinking it is pretty close to finished.  There are only four days left in June so I better get a move on!  I am aiming for the encrusted look around the cameo.  I think I have come close to what I want but it is not quite there yet.

Experimenting

Image
It has been a busy spring and I have not a lot of time to play and experiment.  I am grateful that today was a quiet day and I could do some playing.  I love Inktense pencils and blocks so I pulled them out.  I had bought some interesting cotton yarn and decided to try to color it with the Inktense blocks.  Here it is wrapped on old gift cards and waiting to dry.  I am curious to see how it will stitch.

Sweet romantic finds

These darling hankies were found on a recent thrift store haunt.  They are sweet and delicate!  It is hard to imagine using them for their intended purpose!

Thanks to Sharon B at  http://pintangle.com/  for the instructions for this stitch.  I actually didn't find it terribly difficult even though Sharon described it as tricky.  However getting the wraps to lay nice a neat is tricky.  I managed to do that on a few of the stitches.  I even had a millners needle to use.  Totally surprised me to have one.  Turns out I got some in the big batch of things I inherited from my husband's aunt.  I will have to do another post about all the goodies I received from her.  I am blessed to overflowing!

Actually, I was inspired by my friend Kate and the workshop she led for Gathering at the Gallery last week.  I am so grateful for Kate and her enthusiasm.   It drew me into volunteering at the KW Art Gallery and I am loving it.  Last week Kate had the participants preparing to stitch on some color copies of vintage photos.  It inspired me to stitch on one of my photos.  I am going to make this into a farewell card for Kate.  She is moving at the end of the month and I am not happy about it.

Something a little different.  I have been inspired by a Scrumble a week blog http://prudencemapstone.blogspot.ca/ .   I adore her creations!  However I don't really knit so I started experimenting with different textured yarns and embroidery.  My Mom is a knitter so I used her knitting as a base for my stitching.  I am having fun with this experimentation.

Take a stitch Tuesday Crested Chain stitch

Thanks to Sharon B at  http://pintangle.com/  for the instructions for this stitch.  It looked a bit tricky so I started out on a scrap fabric.  I felt like I got the hang of it so I moved to a crazy quilt block.  I am not totally sure that I have done it right.  But being a free wheeling kind of gal I am going to go with it.  It may not look perfect but it doesn't look horrible.  Today  practice letting go of perfectionism!

The blessings keep flowing to me

The last two Wednesday afternoons I was blessed to teach for the Alzheimer Society's Gathering at the Galley program.  It is such a great program that benefits Alzheimer patients and their caregivers.  I got connected to the program through a friend that works at the KW Art Gallery.  I was asked to teach for the program because I am a fibre artist and they wanted the participants to experience working with fabric/fibre. Of course, a number of the female participants had worked with textiles.  One beautiful soul had made skating costumes for her grandchildren.  She no longer sews those costumes so she shared the above pictured trims with me and the class.  It was a delight for everyone to get use the glitz!  She kindly told me to take home what was leftover.  Fun.  I know for sure I will think of her when I stitch these trims.  I am so blessed!

Thrifty finds

I got all four of these pieces for less than $1.50!  Wow!  Such bargains make my heart sing.  I must get busy and start using these beauties.  I feel the need to make a journal with some of my treasures.  Life has been getting in the way of my art making lately and I am ready for some quiet creative time.

Buttonholed Double Chain for Take a stitch Tuesday

What a nasty mess!  I probably shouldn't even post this.  I definitely struggled with this stitch.  I don't like it well enough to continue struggling with it.  I can't see myself using this one.  I am certainly glad that I didn't try it one of my crazy quilt blocks! Still, I thank Sharon B at  http://pintangle.com/  for taking the time to teach us this stitch.

Inheritance

My husband's aunt passed a few weeks ago.  She was a quilter and embroiderer.  Her dear daughter no longer pursues those activities and wanted her Mom's things to go to someone who will put them to good use.  I am so blessed that she thought of me.  The little sewing box is so sweet.  I will think of Pat and Laurie both when I use it.  I also received some gorgeous quilt squares that Pat embroidered.  I will have to think about how I will use them.  There is so many lovingly stitched pieces and I want to honour the work and the artist.
