Onto the next step

Image
I am liking this piece more.  I have cut away even more since the last post.  I like the irregular edge that I have created.   I have also added some more paint.  I am not pleased with the way the colors are being portrayed in this picture.  Not right!  Trust me when I say it is starting to look good.  Now I think that I am ready to stitch into this piece.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Image
I am calling this block finished.  I marvel at the way people embellish their crazy quilt blocks.  Some are so ornate and encrusted.    I tell myself that I SHOULD do my blocks that way.  SHOULD is a dirty word though.  A friend shared a fun quote with me once - I won't should on you, if you won't should on me.  I really like that!  I have decided that I won't should on myself either. Take a stitch Tuesday

Image
Thanks to Sharon at  http://pintangle.com/  for the instructions for the the Shell Chain stitch, bottom picture and the Beaded Link Chain stitch, top picture.  The close up pictures aren't all that clear, sorry.  I don't want to show more of the pieces as they are projects that are in the works and no where close to finished.  These stitches have a lot of potential and I look forward to using them now that I have learned them!

The next step

Image
I thought I would try removing something from this piece.   The fabric has paper towel adhered to it so it doesn't fray or ravel when cut.    I am really liking what is happening with pieces cut away.  I definitely want to do some more cutting away.  Hopefully once I have done that I will be able to start stitching into this piece.  I feel like I have learned a lot from my explorations with this piece.

The next layer

Image
I wasn't overly in love with the piece I started and showed earlier.  I decided to add a layer of paper towel that had bright pink and turquoise on it.  I adhered it to the fabric with a thinned down white glue.  I thought the bright colors would perk up the piece.  Well, the paper towel over powered the piece, see the top picture.  However the colors bled through to the back of the fabric and made that the more interesting side, bottom picture.  Granted neither of these pictures are accurate in regards to color.  I am still not in love with it and I am considering trying one more thing.  Just not sure what that will be at this time.  I am enjoying the freedom of exploration.  I am not too caught up in the end product.  If works out to be something good, great!  If not, it was a learning a process.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Image
This is a project I started quite a while ago.  I finally have all the hand quilting done on it.  I started with an image of Queen Anne's lace and brought it into my Kaleidoscope Kreator program.  I used the program to work its magic and then printed it on silk.  I did some beading and now it ready to be mounted onto a canvas.  At least that is what I am thinking I will do with it. Take a stitch Tuesday

Image
I am delighted that Sharon at  http://pintangle.com/  has posted a new stitch.  I am an eager learner!  This week the stitch is Linked Chain stitch.  I liked it so well I did it in three different places on a couple of crazy quilts.  I am excited to do the Beaded Chain stitch next week.  I think I will do it on my bead journal project for February.

What is the next layer

Image
This piece of cloth has been gelli printed.  Then I painted on the hearts and swirls.  I used a gold metallic paint and a red metallic Derwent pencil crayon.  Eventually I will stitch into this but I think it needs another layer of something first.  I haven't decided what that will be just yet.  I am debating on using a light spray of paint or possiblly some paper.  We will see.

Experimenting with transparencies

Image
Experimenting is truly one of my favorite things to do!  Pictured above are three pieces I created this week.  I really want to stitch into one of these pieces.  I think that could be really cool.  I also want to cut up a piece and use it for collage. Basic instructions can be found here    http://www.red-castle.com/tutorials/ace-peel/acetate.htm I haven't been able to find Future floor polish around here.  I used matte medium and Diamond Glaze.  I am excited to think of the different ways I can use these pieces.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Image
Here is my January crazy quilt block so far.  It is progressing pretty well.  Actually there isn't that much left to do.  I have found that if I plan a couple of seam treatments each day I can sit down after dinner and do them fairly quickly and easily. Paper napkins or tissue with fabric

Image
Pictured above are four piece of fabric that I embellished with paper napkins.  The piece second from the right has plain tissue paper.  When I work with paper napkins I only use the top printed layer.  You have to remove the other layers of plain tissue from the napkins.  All have been applied to fabric that has been been painted by me.  The piece on the far left also has transfer foil applied to the fabric.  It is adhered to the fabric with fusible web.  I ironed the paper napkin directly to the foil.  I guess the foil is fine/thin enough that it allows the fusible web to come through it.  The piece second from the left has some netting adhered to the fabric and then the paper napkin on top of that.  I  used matte medium or thinned down white glue to adhere it all together. The cloth with the matt medium is now a bit stiff.  I don't mind that.  None of these pieces will be used for clothing or quilts.  I am assuming that it would not stand up to washing.

finished

Image
Okay, this is it.  I am calling this done.  I am excited to move on to the next piece.  I also have to get my January block finished for the crazy quilt project.

more progress

Image
Again, I like what I have done so far.  I was thinking that it was finished.  Now, I have had another idea for just a few more beads.  I will lay them on the piece to see if it will work.  I am thinking it should but I might not have the right colors.  Stay tuned.

bead journal project so far

Image
I added a bit more needle felting to the base and the rows of beads.  After  some delightful hours of beading I needed a break.  I am not exactly sure where to go next with this piece.  I know I want to do more beading on it though.  Maybe I will dig through my stash and see if anything pops out at me. Bead journal project base

Image
I am excited to start the 2014 bead journal project.  Pictured above is a wool needle felted base that I plan to stitch beads to.  My intent for the project this year is to approach it as a mixed media/bead journal project.  I am hoping to use some interesting found objects as beads.  I would also like to create some of my own beads to apply to this.  As at this moment I am still contemplating what to do next on this piece.  I guess going through my bead stash would be a logical next step.

Altered book cover

Image
I covered this hardcover book with decorative tape.  I found the tape at Target and thought it was very fun.  I thought it would add strength to the cover as well as decoration.  I really like the way it turned out.  I might try doing this with washi tape or decorative duct tape.  I am especially thinking of doing it on a journal that has grown quite thick and I am concerned the spine might split.

Work in progress Wednesday

This is my crazy quilt top created from the crazy quilt journal project of 2013.  I am so pleased that I have managed to get the blocks all sewn together.  Now I need to embellish the seams that were created by putting them together.  I do enjoy that part!
