Work in Progress Wednesday

I volunteer with the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery.  There was a zoom workshop this morning where we were exploring watercolours and collage.  It was a lively group of mostly women and there was some great chatter.  We talked about colour schemes and one woman loves to work with neutrals but absolutely no bright colours.  That's the point where my inner critic tries to tell me I am not a real artist because I LOVE working with bright colours.  I started this mandala in that workshop and I think it is a good start but it needs more brights to make me happy.  After all, I really am a rainbows and unicorns kind of gal.  Bring on the glitter and metallics.  Bring on the bright and cheerful.  So what if I am not a 'real' artist in the eyes of others.  I am a real artist in my own eyes and ultimately that is all that matters.

Oh, Angela. There IS no right or wrong in art!!!! There is no such thing as a REAL artist, or rather we are ALL real artists. You can measure time in seconds, you can measure height in inches or mm, you can compare how straight or crocked a line is. That's for the OS and other competitions. When it comes to art, though, we can't say that neutral is better than bright, that red is better than grey. Everything has a place, and everything has someone who loves it. For YOU bright and glittering is a must, for the other lady neutral and 'dull' is the thing. Some people will love your art, others will prefer art with a sombre palette. You know that you should follow your heart, so just do it! There is no need to question your style!
