nature prints

Image
When the leaves start turning color it makes me think of nature printing.  I'm not sure why.  Maybe it's because I have a thing for leaves.  I just love them and hate to see bare trees.  Maybe I just want to preserve them. I am trying to think of a cool way to use these leaves in a stitching project.  I would really like to enter this show   http://www.onnguilds.ca/threadworks/CALLforentry2010b.pdf    The above leaves I printed with interference paint.  I love that stuff.  It's a little hard to tell from the photo how pretty interference paint is.  If you haven't played with it you really must try it.

A fabric journal page

Image
This is a page from my 'Today I Create' fabric journal.  I was thrilled beyond words when this journal was accepted into the Grand National quilt show in 2008.  The background is handmade silk paper that I created.  I included some interesting fibres and threads as well as the silk in it. Kirigami  is paper folding and cutting.   It's like when we were kids and made paper snowflakes.  I used one of these paper snowflakes as a resist stencil and applied two colors of purple paint to white cotton to create the mandala.  I then embellished the mandala with beads and sequins.

Thank you and another free kaleidoscope

I have to say I am loving having a blog!  I have received so many nice comments about my art and my blog.  I squeal with delight just like a school girl when I get a new comment!  I will probably never grow up.  I don't want to - I'm having too much fun the way I am.  So fellow creators, keep the comments coming!  You make me over the moon happy when you do. I am posting this kaleidoscope for you to use in your art.  It's my way of saying thank you for visiting my blog.  If you do use it I would absolutely love to see your piece!

To answer a few questions

These maple leaf sequins I colored with Sharpie markers.  It works quite well.  It does not rub off.  I have not tried putting them through the wash so I don't know how well they stand up to washing.   I must say that I like the alcohol inks better. These fabrics I marbled with cheap acrylic paints and shaving cream.  Okay, what's with the underlining again!!!  I wish I were more html literate!  The acrylic works just as well as the food coloring (see post below).  I would like to try Dye-na-flow as it is very fluid and I think it might move easier than the craft acrylics.  You absolutely must let the acrylic paint cure before washing the fabric.  I taught a class to my guild and one of the students (I love you Elizabeth) washed her marbled fabric right away and it all washed out.  Drag.  If you are in a big hurry to use the fabric you could always heat set it first.

The ideas come, they always come

Usually I have more ideas than the time and energy to do them all. They keep coming though and I'm glad of it. I have finished my altered book. So here are a few more pages. The beaded purse in the above picture was made by my dear sister, Nancy. She is a very talented artist and I love her dearly. I'm a little concerned that I am going to run out of space for pictures on this blog. I don't know how many I am allowed to have and I don't know how to find out. At any rate I have put the rest of the pictures of this book on my Flickr page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25116464@N08/3872333240/ Thanks for looking!

Over the top girly swirly altered book

This book was created around the quote 'girls just want to have funds'. A friend of mine had that quote written in a journal she showed me - it's a take off of the Cindy Lauper song 'Girls just want to have fun'. Well, not to be greedy or anything but I want both fun and funds! Truthfully though I have all I need and I count my many blessings. My book it is not totally finished and so I hesitate to post about it. There is only one page that is not finished and I am a bit stuck. I bought the September issue of Vogue in hopes of finding some inspiration. But, alas, no inspiration was to be found. Anna Wintour you have disappointed me. Or was it the designers that disappointed? Reinventing the 80's!!!! Not a good idea! I figure I wore it twenty years ago so I don't ever have to wear it again. What were they thinking?! Here is the cover of the book. The beautiful beaded purse on the cover I received in a swap. I could never, ever make such a thin...

another fabric journal page

I had fun making this page. It's prettier in real life than the photograph though. I used yarn, sheer fabric and free motion quilting. I still have a lot to learn about free motion quilting. The problem is I have a love - hate relationship with my sewing machine. Ultimately, I would rather hand stitch as my hands always work right.
