Not accepted

Image
I submitted this piece to the Quilting Arts Illumination challenge.  It was not accepted.  Rejection is never particularly easy to take.  Learning of the rejection was just the start of a particularly unpleasant day.  I volunteer to teach art to young men that are incarcerated and that afternoon they were not at their finest.  Often there is juvenile behavior, however, I don't let it bother me.  I try to concentrate on the positives but that day it just sent me into a tailspin.  I like this piece and had fun creating it so ultimately it doesn't matter that it was rejected.  I am linking to http://ninamariesayre.blogspot.ca/

Something a bit different

Image
Actually, really different for me.  I rarely use brown.  Not quite sure why I stitched this little dog onto brown felt.  I certainly could have picked a more dynamic combination of colors.  Oh well, what I particularly love about this dog is the ear.  I had a piece of beach glass that is absolutely perfect and it makes me smile. Work in Progress Wednesday

It is difficult for me to find work to blog about this week.  It certainly isn't because I haven't been creating.  Right now I  am working on a piece for publication, finished a piece I am hoping to have published and my work for my artist in residency at Ayr Library.  Also, I have started teaching art to seniors on a weekly basis and that requires a fair amount of prep.  I am finished my March 'sinchie' guild challenge and I posted that last week.  This is the start of my April piece.  The challenge color is obviously white.  I applied fibre paste using a texture plate to imprint it.  I must have set this piece on top of something that had blue paint on it as a bit has seeped onto it.  That may or may not get covered up.  I am linking to http://www.quiltfabrication.com/ https://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.ca/ http://needleandthreadnetwork.blogspot.ca/

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Image
Sharon B  is challenging us to do the Chevron stitch this week.  I don't use this stitch very often but I am familiar with it.  I added the Fly stitch and the Chain stitch.  It makes an interesting seam embellishment.  These muted colors are very different for me but they work for this project.

Slow Progress

Image
My bead journal for March is coming along.  One part of me wants to call it finished but another part sees so many more ways to add beads.  As it is now I will have to park this project and concentrate on some teaching workshops.  That is always fun too! Work in Progress Wednesday

Image
My 'sinchie' is finished.  Our guild challenge is a six-inch square and the colour this month is brown.  I rarely work with the colour brown but I did manage to find some brown things in my stash.  I started with a hand-dyed wool as the base.   I added some painted cheesecloth and lace and kept building from there.  I really wanted this piece to be full of texture.  Silk pods, mica flakes, heated tyvek, a feather and a skeleton leaf were added to create a forest floor. A highlight of our trip to Hawaii was Foster Botanical Garden.  I very happily spent time there.  Our Uber driver had never heard of the place and couldn't fathom why I wanted to go there, let alone bring a camera.  Clearly, we all aren't on the same page when it comes to beauty!  Kind of funny. Journal page

Image
The journal prompt this week is friends.  I wasn't particularly inspired.  This journal page is okay but the dog image isn't all that clear.  I should probably color it in with a black marker to make it a true silhouette.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This is the start of my bead journal for March.  I started by creating a mandala with paper and fabric.  I stitched all together, painted it, melted/burned some of the fabric away and wet the paper so that I could rub some of it away.  I have stitched it to black fabric and added some sequins.  Lots of beads to follow! Mixed-Media Self-Portrait Challenge

Image
San Fransisco School of Needlework and Design hosts some really interesting challenges.  I have participated in two now.  Above is my self-portrait for the challenge.  I had a lot of fun creating this.  Pop over to their website to see the others in the challenge.   self-portrait challenge gallery   There are some really interesting pieces there. Also, I came across this today.   Embroidered self-portraits   which I found interesting.

Not afraid of glue

Image
I think for a long time I felt like others in the fibre community that glue was taboo.  I no longer feel that way and have been embracing using it.  I created these funky flowers with bits of thread and watered down glue.  Okay, they don't really look like flowers.  I need to further embellish them.  They won't be going on a quilt so it doesn't matter that I used glue.  They will be going into an altered book. Journal

Image
Still working with the 3R prompt.  I used a large envelope as the base of this journal cover.  I applied scraps of fabric that were given to me many years ago.  I have had so much fun with those scraps over the years.  So glad they didn't go in the garbage!  I did the pamphlet stitch to bind in the pages of fabric and paper.  I used some of the paper that I snow dyed a couple of weeks ago, a piece of fabric that was brought back from India by a sweet niece, and some ribbon leftover from Christmas.  I love this little journal!  It is funky and fun which suits me perfectly.
