Work in Progress Wednesday

Image
I volunteer with the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery.  There was a zoom workshop this morning where we were exploring watercolours and collage.  It was a lively group of mostly women and there was some great chatter.  We talked about colour schemes and one woman loves to work with neutrals but absolutely no bright colours.  That's the point where my inner critic tries to tell me I am not a real artist because I LOVE working with bright colours.  I started this mandala in that workshop and I think it is a good start but it needs more brights to make me happy.  After all, I really am a rainbows and unicorns kind of gal.  Bring on the glitter and metallics.  Bring on the bright and cheerful.  So what if I am not a 'real' artist in the eyes of others.  I am a real artist in my own eyes and ultimately that is all that matters.

A Spot of Sunshine

It is a grey February day here in Canada.  We could probably all due with a bit of sunshine and I think this kaleidoscope fits the bill.  May all our days be filled with peace and joy.

Slow Stitching Sunday

Another mandala finished.  I love thee encrusted look and really enjoyed stitching this.  If I ever do another mandala in this fashion I will plan to not go all the way to the edge.  That will require choosing a base fabric in a colour I want to see.  This fabric is a beautiful silk to stitch into.  The colour is not really a favourite so that made the choice to cover it completely quite easy.   This is the last mandala for my installation submission.  I love idea of mounting my mandala on the wall in a spiral design as I have previously mentioned.  The spiral being infinite means that as I create more mandalas there will always be room for them.  I am excited to get started on my next mandala! Another Mandala

Another mandala finished.  It was a delight to stitch this mandala on the gorgeous silk.  I love the sound of the thread being pulled through the silk.  No other fabric sounds like silk.  I have messed up the counting of my hooped mandalas.  This is mandala 27.  I have mandala 28 finished and that will be it.  Well, at least for the installation that I will be submitting.  I had thought I had 30 mandalas but nope.  You'd never know I have a bookkeeping background!   I am working on the artist statement for this installation.  ugh.  Not my favourite thing to do.  I plan to hang all 28 mandalas in a spiral shape on the wall.  The reason for the spiral shape is that I think it will look good.  That doesn't work for an artist statement though.  I need to come up with some BS, I mean artistic story for the spiral.  I say ugh again.  My word for the month of February is LIGHT.  I knocked out this journal page in no time.  I had a very interesting background to use.  But it would have been unpleasant to stitch through all the layers of paint and texture that is on it.  I decided to write my word with dimensional fabric paint.  It was rather quick and easy.  I also added a bit of transfer foil for added sparkle.  Originally, I thought this journal would be mainly beaded but I am not going to hold myself strictly to that idea.  I am okay with having some mixed media pieces in it as well.  It feels good to have this journal page done so early in the month!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I found the perfect button to go into the centre of this mandala.  I love when my stash has the perfect thing!  This mandala is finished and I love how the sparkly threads look on the dark background.  The background is purple but looks grey in the photo.  It is a grey-purple to be sure but the camera is really not picking up the purple.  This is mandala 29 in my hooped series.  I am planning to submit 30 hooped mandalas for an upcoming show.  I have one mandala left to be finished and it is very close to being done.  Getting the artist statement right will be important.   I am linking to https://kathysquilts.blogspot.com/

Little Landscape

I am still sporadically stitching away on this piece.  It is so cheerful and just what I need at this dreary time of year.  I use up the last bit of thread on a needle to add to this piece.  It can be a bit slow going but I have made some progress since I last posted about this piece.  I like having a piece that is just for doodling.  There is no end date in mind.  Nor is there any kind of goal for it.  Just having some fun.  That is enough.
