Mandala Monday

The red and green make this one feel Christmasy to me.  Not necessarily a bad thing just a little out of the ordinary for me.   I think adding some black helped tone down the Christmas feeling a bit.  It also makes it feel more meditative for me.   You would think that if I was going to post a holiday-type mandala today of all days it would have been for Halloween.  Oh well!

I am working on this whole cloth crazy quilt again.  I saw the inspiration for this quilt in Kathy Shaw's book Crazy Quilting Volume 1:Beyond the Basics.  I had never seen a whole cloth crazy quilt prior to reading this book.  I have tried finding out more about them by searching with Google but there doesn't seem to be much out there.  I will do my best with the information I have.  I think I will add one more seam to this piece and then start filling in the sections with motifs.   I am linking to https://kathysquilts.blogspot.com/

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have been working on the mandala part of my collaboration with some seniors.  I really want it to say joy but I am not sure that I have accomplished that.  I am also not sure what else to add to it.  There is already a fair amount going on here.  Sometimes getting a mandala right can be a slow process!

This mandala is far from perfect but I am still willing to share.  I saw a quote that said Perfectionism is the fear of being criticised.  That really struck a chord with me.  My lovely blog readers make it easy to post with all my imperfections.  You are all so supportive and kind.  Another quote I saw said Imperfection is a form of freedom.  That also rang true to me.  My art-making is a freedom and joy to me.

I have added some beading to this mandala and feel like it is finished now.  This is the last hooped mandala for my show.  It feels really good to have completed 65 stitched mandalas and I think/hope my show is beautiful.  I still have two other mandalas to work on that are in two different collaborative pieces. I have three collaborative pieces for the show.  One with my family, one with the seniors I teach and one with my granddaughter's kindergarten class.   The family one is finished.  I am resisting the temptation to clean up the messy bits that were done by the littles.  It is an accurate depiction of all the ages that contributed to it.  The mandala is stitched on that piece.  All of the circles/spots have been painted on the piece by my seniors.  I am still working on the mandala part of that collaboration.  The collaboration with the kindergarteners hasn't taken place yet.  I will be going to the class on No...

I am joining  LeeAnna  and the gang again for an I like Thursday post.  This week the prompt is  what is your favorite Halloween candy? Did you have different favorites as a kid than now? What was your favorite one to see put in your trick or treat bag??? Let's remember how fun it was to get candy... It was fun to get candy as a kid.  It was such a big treat.  I also remember when my kids were young we would go to Walmart the day after Halloween.  We would buy up all their favourites at half price.  So much sugar!  One of my sons would have all his candy gone in a few days.  Another son would have it for a couple of weeks.  And for another son, we would end up throwing out some of his candy probably after Christmas.  Interesting how different they are/were. I rarely eat candy anymore after watching a documentary about sugar.  It is SO bad for you and that takes all the joy out of eating candy.  Well, I do cave when it...

I love the shimmer and shine of this mandala.  Paint, paper, glitter and markers were used to create this one.  The calming colours of blue and green really make this one feel meditative.  I find it so wonderful that creating a mandala and looking at a mandala can be so peaceful and soothing.  Couldn't we all use a bit more of that?
