Thinking

I did this mixed media mandala a while ago.  I had been thinking that I would do all my mandalas in a 12x 12-inch square but the last one I finished I decided to leave in a round hoop.  I quite like it that way so now I am considering putting more of them in a hoop.  Most of them I have quilted and did my own kind of binding on but that is not the fun part for me.  Is there anything wrong with putting some of them in a hoop and calling them done?  If I ever have a solo show of my mandalas (which is my dream) would they all have to square?  Quilted and bound?

Work in Progress Wednesday

My June bead journal is finished.  Usually, I turn my bead journals into small quilted wall hangings but this time I plan to leave this one in the hoop.  I think it works alright.  Why create extra work for me?  This piece is truly mixed media.  I started on fabric that was used as a cleanup cloth so already had imperfection built-in.  No need for me to be concerned about messing it up!  I added some silver leaf in the centre and then started beading and stitching.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I have posted about this piece a number of times.  I was able to add the final stitches to it this week.  I really enjoyed this slow stitching project and rather pleased with it.  It is a bright and cheerful landscape full of stitched love.  I can definitely see myself doing something along this line again.

Journal Page

This is not a remarkable piece of art but it was ever so fun to do.  I did a mini-workshop and the instructions were to do a collage with any kind of scrap paper and then add doodles.  In her instructions, she used a plain black pen to do the doodles.  I tried that and enjoyed it but I enjoy using colour more!  I have more journal pages with scraps already glued down just waiting for me to add my doodles.  Working in an art journal is so freeing.  There is no pressure to create something 'good'.  It is time to explore what different materials will do, how the media will react.  Let the colours fly!

Journal

This little journal is full of joy and strength.  I created it from one large sheet of paper that my granddaughter had painted.  I folded and cut it so that is eight pages that include pockets.  On each page, I adhered one letter to spell the word strength which we all need.  Each pocket also has a page inside.  I haven't pictured them as I haven't done much on them as yet.  The cover is collaged fabric and beading.  I used bright and cheerful colours that make me happy.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have made a little headway on my bead journal for this month.  I better get cracking on it to finish before the end of the month.  I have been a little distracted from my stitching.  I signed up for a couple of online art journal workshops and have been enjoying splashing paint around.  There doesn't seem to be enough time for painting and stitching.  Both are relaxing and enjoyable.  I am not sure if I will post my paintings even though I am happy with the paintings they are not remarkable.  Back to the beading!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I have started hand quilting this piece.  I have the perfect thread for it in my stash.  That makes me so happy when that happens.  Not that I am against buying more thread mind you! Hand quilting on my deck, in the sunshine, is an absolutely delightful pastime.   I want to start adding beads to this piece but haven't quite figured that part out.

Fabric/Paper Collage

I have had a lot of pleasure creating my little collages.  They are fairly quick to create and I enjoy that as a lot of my pieces can involve a fair amount of time.  At least, by my standards.  I think this is the last one.  I now need to put my thinking cap on as to how to bind all my pages together into one book form.  Nothing has sprung immediately to mind so I may have to let this percolate.  No rush.  I am confident the idea will come.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I have added more beads to this piece.  There is a lot going on in this piece and yet I still feel more is needed.  I will keep stitching on it.  The weather is good and I can sit outside and enjoy my new deck while stitching.

Photography

I think street art is so great.  It is amazing to me that artists can think so big.  It seems overwhelming to me.  Possibly I could paint a giant mandala but not something like this.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I made some progress on my bead journal for June.  I managed to sit outside and enjoy some stitching and some sunshine yesterday.    That is complete and utter bliss for me.  I really do count myself as blessed to be to that.

Collage

I while ago I did an embroidery challenge and created the background for this.  It was not remarkable but I am not one to waste something.  It wasn't intended for a background but I think it works for this collage.  I covered most of it and that makes it better.  I love the wool fabric base and it will work in my collage book perfectly.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Can you see any resemblance to the fabric I posted last week?  I really liked that fabric but knew I had to take it further.  I got out my paints and just had so much fun adding colour.  It is so much more interesting.  What will I do with it now?  Quilt it?  Bead it?

I am still enjoying looking at the beautiful street art that we saw in Mexico. I so enjoy seeing all the talent of artists.  I can appreciate the creativity of all artists.  I don't always like the art of all artists but that's okay.

Slow Stitching Sunday

This piece is coming along slowly but enjoyably.  I have started adding beads and that is a favourite thing to do.  I am hoping that I can sit outside and do some more beading/stitching today.  Oh, how I love enjoying the sunshine and stitching.  Actually, I have been taking my journal outside and enjoying that as well.  Making art of any kind outside is very satisfying.

Fabric and Paper Collage

These little collages are quick and fun to create.  They will all come together to make an interesting journal of this crazy time.  I would say they are not particularly reflective of this COVID time which is fine with me.  I don't need my art to be that.  My art-making is solace for my soul.  My art-making is something I HAVE to do and that is enough.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This piece of fabric jumped out at me today.  I am not sure that it is a work in progress.  I am not totally sure about it at all but I do like the stencilled gear pattern.  I am pondering cutting it up for collage or stitching into it.  Or both.  Or adding more paint.  I just got excited about adding more paint so I think that is the answer.

Photography

If we choose to look for it we can always find beauty.  We can always find something for which to be grateful.  We can always find good and caring people.  I know many artists feel they need to call attention to the dark and ugly.  That is their choice and I applaud them for making a statement.  I choose to concentrate on what brings me joy.  I think we need more joy and light in the world.

I saw this gorgeous street art in Mexico when we were there earlier this year.  I am grateful we got to have a warm holiday before all of the craziness started.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am still doing my little stitched collages.  Combining fabric, paper and stitch really makes me happy.  I was excited to find a way to use this tiny carpet that a friend gifted me.  She always brings back the most enticing things from her travels.  I turned it into a pocket to hold another small collage and the label from the package that it was in.  I want to remember everything about where this tiny carpet came from.

I am still not sure how I will bind all these pages into a fabric book.  I will continue to do the collages and trust that the right way to bind them will come to me.

Work in Progress Wednesday

I am completely in love with my bead journal for May.  It is a kaleidoscope/mandala hybrid, mixed media and beaded piece of beauty.  At least it is to me and that is enough.  The weather has been cooperating and I have been able to stitch on this outside.  Oh, that feels so good.  The natural light for beading is also lovely.

Our weather has been beautifully warm and sunny.  It takes me back to our trip to Mexico where we saw the most magnificent street art.  This turtle is stunning.  It kind of makes me think of a crazy quilt.

Stitched Journal Cover

So fun to go through my stash of fabrics I have collected to create this journal cover.  So much sparkliness!  These have been stitched down to a base and are now ready for more embellishment.  Yes, I said more!  I want this cover to say jewel box.  I am well on my way to that goal.

I find myself starting new projects at this time.  At the beginning of the year, which feels like mere days ago I was happily working at finishing up projects.  There are still plenty to finish up but not the inclination or inspiration.

A little collage journal

These little collages are so fun to make.  I had made this set a while ago, top photo.  I decided to bind them together and add collage to the backside, bottom photo.  Just a little concertina book full of vintage goodies and found word poetry.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am disappointed with my lack of progress on this one.  I had great intentions but they did not materialize.  I think today is going to be a day for lazing about with my stitching.  It isn't that I haven't been creating.  I am still posting a mandala a day on Instagram.  That is very calming/meditative for me.  I have also been doing some work on journals.  I will have to post those soon.  My word banner installation has also been a fun project.  Every snippet of time has been put to good use.

Putting some positivity out there

I have created some fun word banners and hung them in the tree in front of my house.  This has been a really fun project for me.  I have had a number of positive comments on it.  I have seen people walking by and smiling as they read the words.  I am hoping this is as uplifting for the viewers as it has been for me creating it.

Fabric/Paper Collage

Vintage isn't my typical style/colour palette but I do like it.  I am having a lot of fun with these little collages and look forward to putting them all together into some sort of book.  These little collages have got only one positive comment.  Thank you, Collete, for your affirming words! I don't make my art for other people so positive comments are not totally necessary.  However, right now maybe I am feeling more vulnerable or less confident, just not quite myself.  Understandable for sure.  Anyway, the one positive comment has gone a long way to strengthening my resolve to continue down this collage path.  It really only matters that I like them.

Work in Progress Wednesday

Okay, I admit I may have a problem.  I just can't stop thinking kaleidoscopes and mandalas.  This is the start of my next beaded piece.  Obviously, no beads as yet.  I have some really awesome cleanup clothes that I have been wanting to use so that is the base.  I love the serendipity of the colours on the cleanup cloth.  I have adhered some silver leaf.  Next, I will add stitching and beads.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am so happy pleased with the way this mandala is progressing.  I was able to get a fair amount of beading done on it this week.  The pink is being knocked back by the beads and that is a good thing.  I can't wait to add more colour.

Small Collage

Okay, these mixed-media collages are a lot of fun to create.  I was going through some random bits and the green/gold silk scrap had a gold star sitting on top it.  It spoke to me and was the start of this collage.  The most fun part for me is picking out the words to create found poetry.  I think this will be a great addition to my fabric book.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I am so enjoying the stitching on this one.  I am trying to be more purposeful about my stitching.  Each time I intend to stitch I get out a different collection of threads.  I have an AMAZING collection.  It gives me so much pleasure to look at the beautiful threads and then be intentional about using them.  So much texture and colour!  Joy!

Fabric/paper collage

A few weeks ago I did an online collage challenge.  I quite enjoyed it and have been wanting to do some more.  Combining fabric, thread and paper is a lot of fun.  I felt the need to trap a butterfly under thread.  This week has been tough.  I kind of hit a wall.  I know that being trapped at home is not the end of the world so my found word poetry on this piece has a positive outlook.  I simply won't let myself go down a dark hole but I do need to acknowledge my feelings.  I am leaning towards doing a collage a week and putting them all together into a fabric book.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This is a fun piece for me as it is all experimentation.  The background is a mandala that turned out rather PINK.  I am working at taming that.  I made a colour copy of one of my coffee filter mandalas. I reduced it to about half size and adhered it to fusible interfacing and applied it to the centre of this piece.  I like the way this is coming and plan to add beads and stitch.

Slow Stitching Sunday

I have managed to get add some stitches to this piece.  Slow stitching indeed.  A few days ago I decided I simply must find more time to express myself with stitch.  I NEED to feel more productive.  Helping look after my almost three-year-old granddaughter is a privilege, joy, taxing and oh so much more.  I know it is special but it does not feel productive to me.  At least not art-wise.  I have gathered my stitching projects into one pile and committed to adding a little bit of stitching to each one of them every day if possible.

Still stitching on this one

There is still a bit of room on this piece to add some stitching.  Not much mind you.  It is a bright and cheerful piece that gives me a lot of pleasure to stitching onto it.  I am in no rush to finish it as I don't really know its end purpose.  Does it have to have a purpose other than my pleasure of stitching?

Work in Progress Wednesday

I love Maggie Grey and own many of her books.  Her mixed media approach to stitch is really inspiring.  I have drifted away from that for the last while and would like to return to it. Maggie posted a challenge on her blog and this is my start at that challenge.  I wanted to incorporate collage as I have been listening to The Jealous Curator podcast.  I have dabbled with collage over the years and feel like some of my textile work is a collage.

So this is a mandala collage with found poetry.  Stitch still needs to be added to it but I need to back it with fusible interfacing before I can start stitching.  I used black Brusho powder on a coffee filter for the base.  I love the way the black breaks out into different colours when wet.

Mandala Meditation

I am still loving doing my mandala meditations.  I have been posting one a day on Instagram @angelagrasse  This is one of my favourites.  I do love analogous colours.  I also push myself to use colour combinations that are analogous or even my favourite colours.  It is good to get out of the box.

So well said

A MESSAGE FROM YAYOI KUSAMA TO THE WHOLE WORLD

Though it glistens just out of reach, I continue to pray for hope to shine through
Its glimmer lighting our way
This long awaited great cosmic glow
Now that we find ourselves on the dark side of the world
The gods will be there to strengthen the hope we have spread throughout the universe
For those left behind, each person’s story and that of their loved ones
It is time to seek a hymn of love for our souls
In the midst of this historic menace, a brief burst of light points to the future
Let us joyfully sing this song of a splendid future
Let’s go
Embraced in deep love and the efforts of people all over the world
Now is the time to overcome, to bring peace
We gathered for love and I hope to fulfill that desire
The time has come to fight and overcome our unhappiness
To COVID-19 that stands in our way
I say Disappear from this earth
We shall fight
We shall fight this terrible monster
Now is the time for people all over the world to stand up
My deep gratitude goes to all those who are already fighting.

Work in Progress Wednesday

This slow stitching piece is in the latest Stich magazine.  I can't wait to see it.  I know I could purchase a digital copy but I would prefer a physical copy.  I am wondering if I will ever be able to go to a book store to get a copy.  Mostly I enjoy being able to stay home and create but this confinement is starting to feel a bit much!
